Openai turns to Google for help with his growing computing needs, three sources said Reuters. This step is axed due to the rivalry between the two in artificial intelligence, but reflects a massive request for computing power to train and operate AI models.
One of the three sources said that the agreement was completed in May after months of discussion. Openai is trying to make it easier to rely on Microsoft by adding other cloud providers to satisfy growing demand. This included support for extensive efforts, such as its Stargate project and maintaining obligations concluded in recent agreements with Chipmakers and retailers.
For Google, Association brings a new major customer to the cloud platform. The Company will provide additional computing sources to support of AI training and Openai model operations, sources said. This comes when Chatgpt continues to challenge Google. Yet Google Executifs recently acknowledged that there may be room for more than one winner in AI.
Openi, Google and Microsoft refused to comment.
The sale of the launch of the Chatgpt at the end of 2022, OpenIa faced a growing press to expand its computing capacity – both for training large language models, and for the end or enthusiastic in real time. On Monday, Openi said his annualized income had achieved $ 10 billion since June 2025, powered by the growing use of his instruments.
At the beginning of this year, Openi joined with SoftBank and Oracle to efforts to infrastructure of $ 500 billion and signed more billion dollars with Coreweave. The company also works on designing its own chip to limit the external use of hardware, Reuters Reported in February.
The agreement with Google follows the shift at the beginning of this year, which ended the exclusive dependence of OpenI on Azure Microsoft. The person familiar with the situation said that Openi and Google had spoken for some time, but existing agreements with Microsoft have delayed any agreement. Microsoft and Openi are now overlapping the conditions of their partnership, including the future ownership of Microsoft.
For Google, timing is sewn with pressure to expand the use of its internal chips called units of tensor processing or TPU. TPUs have once been limited to internal projects, but are now used by external customers, are Apple and Openi competitors, including anthropic and safe superintelligence.
Adding OpenI to your Cloud Customer List gives Google another way to expand your cloud business, which last year Bushht at $ 43 billion – about 12% of total revenue from the alphabet. Google stood up as a neutral cloud provider for startups to avoid locking into Amazon or Microsoft and AI to become the main source of expenditure.
Yet Google faces its own pressures. The company pours money to AI and capital expenditure for $ 75 billion this year. At the same time, under the vote of regulatory bodies and printing from investors who want to see the return on their billions.
An internally agreement adds another layer of complexity. Google Deepmind Laboratory competes with Openai and selling computing energy of the opponent can create tension about how resources are shared. Sundar Pichai, CEO, will have to consider Google business customers’ request against his own AI teams.
The tension is already felt. Google’s finance manager said in April that the company did not have sufficient cloud capacity to satisfy the demand in the previous quarter. And while Chatgpt leads the risk that OpenAi will start to start the company’s main business in the numbers.
